Institute of Contemporary Art Celebrates 5 Artful Years With Cat Power, Jan. 18 at Faena Forum

Was it really 5 years ago that Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) opened its gleaming doors in the Design District? It feels like only 2 or 3 since Design District empresario Craig Robins and LVMH donated the land straddling NE 41st Street on which car dealership titans Norman and Irma Braman sprinkled millions and millions to fund Miami’s newest museum. Time flies.

Designed by Spanish firm Aranguren & Gallegos Arquitectos with killer geometric metal cladding, the modern cube’s exhibition spaces and expansive (and public) art garden have since promoted “continuous experimentation in contemporary art, programs and exhibitions from local, emerging and under-recognized artists.” Besides the artsy art, MiMi just loves its gargantuan, ‘Gram-tastic ICA MIAMI letters on the sidewalk, it’s fun merch, and the museum’s generous policy of free admission for everyone, nearly all the time.

To mark ICA’s 5th birthday, the museum is celebrating with a special intimate performance by singer-songwriter and recording artist Cat Power at its “365 AfterParty 2020″, taking place at the cavernous, cylindrical Faena Forum Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 10:00pm. Cat Power, née Charlyn Marie Marshall and an occasional actress and model, is an internationally-renowned American musician who aurally trafficks in punk, folk and blues. She’s even collaborated with members of Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, and Lana del Rey. Cool! Supporting her as an opening act is Miami musician Daniel Milewski, husband of local arts-champion and gallerist Nina Johnson-Milewski.

Tickets to Cat Power and Daniel Milewski are $100, which support ICA’s programming and exhibitions, but better yet, the evening includes an open bar until midnight. Dress well. And do this.
